DOT Physicals Q&A

What are DOT physicals?

A Department of Transportation (DOT) physical is an exam required of all commercial drivers by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). It assesses your general health to make sure you’re capable of driving a commercial vehicle.

After you pass your DOT physical at Serenity Healthcare, PLLC, Shanekwah completes a certificate that you submit to your employer. The certificate is good for two years unless you have an underlying medical condition that requires more frequent checkups.

Who needs to participate in DOT physicals?

You’re required to participate in a DOT physical every two years if you:

  • Drive a commercial truck that displays a hazmat placard
  • Get paid to drive a vehicle that carries more than eight people
  • Operate a vehicle that carries more than 15 people
  • Drive a vehicle with a gross combination weight rating of over 10,000 pounds

If you have a chronic medical condition, like obstructive sleep apnea, hypertension (high blood pressure), or heart disease, the FMCSA requires annual checkups.

What happens during DOT physicals?

A DOT physical features three steps:

Step one: Review your health history

First, Shanekwah asks about your lifestyle and general health, including the medications you take, if you use alcohol, tobacco, or other substances, and if you have any underlying medical issues.

Step two: Physical exam

Next, Shanekwah conducts a physical exam. She checks your hearing, vision, and blood pressure, examines your skin for abnormalities, and gently palpates your organs.

Step three: Lab tests

Last, Shanekwah orders lab tests, including blood work, urinalysis, and drug testing. If all of your results are normal, Shanekwah fills out a certificate that clears you to drive a commercial vehicle.

What should I bring to a DOT physical?

Shanekwah recommends bringing the following items to your DOT physical:

  • Your glasses, contacts, and/or hearing aids
  • Results from any recent medical tests
  • The names and contact info for doctors or specialists you’ve visited recently
  • Names of the medications you take
  • Paperwork from your employer

Most DOT physicals take 45-60 minutes. After you’re finished, you can return to work and other activities.

If it’s time to renew your commercial driver’s license, request a DOT physical at Serenity Healthcare, PLLC by calling the office or booking online today.
